Add a Category
Categories allow both you, and your website visitors, to filter the media pages displayed in the public facing Media Manager, using the media manager listing component. For example, you could allow users to search through a list of bylaws or ordinances by name, issue date or expiration date.
You will want to set up your categories as one of your first steps when building the content for your Media Manger.
Adding a category
To add a category to the media manager, you need to:
- Navigate to the Media Manager node in the content tree
- Open the Media Manager node and right-click 'Categories'
- Select 'Create' from the node options menu
- Select the 'Media Category' document type
- Enter the category name in the 'Enter a name...' field
- Switch to the advance tab and disable delete, if necessary. This prevents the category from being deleted by non-administrator back office users
- Select 'Save and publish...' to complete the process
The name is the only parameter available for a category. Once published it will appear as an option when creating media pages and media manager listings.
Deleting a category
Deleting a category that is assigned to a media manager listing or media page may have undesirable results. Remove categories from all pages and listings before deleting them.
To delete a category in the media manager:
- Navigate to the media manager node in the content tree
- Open the media manager node and select 'Categories'
- Select the tile for the category you want to delete. Do not click the category name or it will open for editing
- Select the 'Delete' button at the upper right of the screen. A confirmation dialogue will open and provide a list of any media pages the category is attached to. Take not and correct these if necessary
- Select 'Yes, delete' in the confirmation dialogue to complete the process
Deleted categories in Media Manager will be transferred to the recycle bin in the content tree and can be restored from there if necessary.
Pro tip for creating categories
Categories are broad classes of media pages that you can group together to display. When you create a media manger listing you can select which categories of media page that will appear in the list. A drop down menu is provided to website visitors so they can see which categories are available and select which media pages they would like to display in the list.
Organize you categories to best suite the types of documents you want to display. For example if you are displaying bylaws you might want to set up categories by type, year, or when they expired. If you are working with real estate, categories could include residential, office, industrial, and commercial.
Media pages can be assigned to multiple categories if required.
What's next?
Now that you've created a list of categories you'll want to create your meta information fields so that you can add additional information to your documents.
