Create Meta Information Fields

Meta information fields are form fields you can add to media page templates and media pages to provide additional information for your documents. They can also be used as search filters in the media manager listing component to help your site visitors find the information they're looking for.

For example, if you would like to have your bylaw document display a bylaw number, a date of enactment, or a link to the bylaw, each one of these would need to be set up as a meta information field.

You should create any meta information fields you need prior to adding media pages to your site, or creating media page templates.

Types of meta information

Meta information fields come in 5 types:

Use text fields to provide information that fits into a single line of text.

Examples include document name, version number, author, and bylaw number.

Text area fields display larger blocks of text. Use text areas if you have more than a single word or short phrase to display.

Examples include summaries, abstracts, descriptions, and comments.

Use date fields to place a date stamp on your document or media page. When completing this field on your media page a date picker will be provided.

Examples include submission dates, expiration dates, and adoption dates.

Dates with time fields allows you to add a date and time stamp to your document or media page. When completing this field on your media page, a date and time picker will be provided.

Examples include specific meeting dates and deadlines.

Link fields allow you to add a hyperlink to other resources as part of your document or media page.

This could include a document, such as a repealed bylaw or application form, or webpages, such as a Google map or contact information.

Create a meta information field

To add a meta information field for use in media pages and media page templates follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the media manager node in the content tree and open it
  2. Open the 'Meta Information' node. A list of meta information field types will expand
  3. Right click the type of meta information field you would like to create (text fields, text area fields, date fields, dates with time fields, or link fields) to open the node options menu
  4. Select 'Create'
  5. Select the 'Text Field' document type
  6. Enter the meta information field name in the 'Enter a name...' field. Examples might include Bylaw Number, Article Summary, or Expiration Date.
  7. Switch to the advance tab and disable delete, if necessary. This prevents the meta information from being deleted by non-administrator back office users
  8. Select 'Save and publish...' to complete the process

Your new meta information field will now be available to add to your media page templates, or directly to media pages if preferred.

Note that changing the name of a meta information field will update it on all media pages.
