Changing Your Sitemap

You can update your website menu and navigation as necessary with the Govstack Content Management System. For example, you may want to add another main menu option, or move a page to a different menu. Learn how to edit your sitemap to keep your website up to date with all the services and programs you offer.

Add a main menu option

You may want to add a new main vertical menu to your website. For example, perhaps you build out a new service offering around Economic Development and decide to add a "Business" vertical menu to appear as one of the main menus at the top of the website.

To add this menu, you need to:

  1. Navigate to the 'Content' tab in the Govstack back office
  2. Select the 'Home' node
  3. Under the 'Home' node you will see each of the main menu options
  4. Right click on the home node and select "Add page" from the dropdown list
  5. In the text field at the top of the page, enter the name of the new menu (e.g., Business)
  6. Then you can add content to the page

Pro tip

We recommend having between 4 to 6 main vertical menu options. If your website has more options at the top of the website, it can become difficult for users to choose where to look to find information. The top navigation menu can also start to look cluttered if there are too many options.

Rename a main menu or page

You may decide to rename a page or main menu to better reflect the services and programs offered by your organization. To do this, you need to:

  1. Navigate to the page or menu item you'd like to rename in the content tree under the 'Home' node
  2. Select the page or menu that you'd like to rename
  3. This will open the page's 'Content' tab
  4. In the text field at the top of the page update the name of the page or menu item
  5. Select 'Save and publish' to complete the process

Add pages to the menu

Now that you've added a new main menu, you'll want to add subpages below the menu. Learn how to add a page to a menu.

Move pages in your menu

If you're using Menu Manager, any page you move within the content tree found under the 'Home' node, will be reflected in your website navigation on the live website. To move a menu item or page, you need to:

  1. Located the page you'd like to move under the 'Home' node of the 'Content' tab
  2. Right click on the page you'd like to move
  3. Select 'Move' from the slide-out panel
  4. This will open the content tree under the 'Home' node
  5. From here, select the name of the page that you'd like to move this page under (e.g., if you'd like to move a page from under the Living Here menu to under the Business menu, you'll want to select 'Business')
  6. Then, select 'Move'

The page will be placed at the bottom of the menu under the page you've selected. We recommend keeping your menu in alphabetical order to make it easier for users to navigate through your website. To sort the pages under the menu, you need to:

  1. Right click the menu that you moved the page to from the 'Home' node
  2. Select 'Sort'
  3. You can then drag the menu item (page) to the appropriate spot within the menu
  4. Select 'Save' to complete the process

If you're using the Govstack navigation tool, you can learn how to move and sort menu items.

Delete pages

If you are using Menu Manager, you can delete from your website menu, by deleting them from the content tree. To do this, you need to:

  1. Navigate to the page you want to delete in the content tree under the 'Home' node
  2. Right click on the name of the page
  3. Select the 'Delete' option
  4. This will open a slide-out panel asking to confirm that you want to delete the page
  5. Select the 'Okay' button to delete the page

When you delete a page, it will also delete any subpages associated with that page. The changes will automatically be reflected in the menu of your live website.

If you are using the Govstack navigation, you'll need to update the menu in the Global node once you've made changes to the content tree. Learn how to:
