Alternative URLs

You can create friendly URLs for pages on your website using the Alternative URL function in the Govstack Content Management System. A friendly URL is a shorter, more accessible version of a web page’s URL address.

Create a friendly URL

To create a friendly URL for a web page, follow these steps:

  1. Select the 'Content' tab from the Govstack main menu
  2. In the left navigation tree, find the page you want to create a friendly URL for
  3. Select the 'SEO & Share' tab, and scroll down to the 'Alternative URL' field
  4. Enter a single word or short phrase that describes your target web page to complete the shortened URL. Use dashes between words, if necessary, not spaces
  5. You can add multiple friendly URLs for your page by separating each word or short phrase with a comma
  6. After adding your friendly URL(s), select 'Save and publish'

Edit or delete a friendly URL

To edit or delete a friendly URL from a web page, you need to:

  1. Select the 'Content' tab from the Govstack main menu
  2. In the left navigation tree, find the page you want to edit or delete a friendly URL for
  3. Select the 'SEO & Share' tab, and scroll down to the 'Alternative URL' field
  4. Edit or remove the language in the existing friendly URLs field
  5. Select 'Save and publish' to complete the process

When to use friendly URLs

You can use friendly URLs when you want to direct people to your web page but cannot link them directly. This usually happens with non-electronic promotional material where full URLs need to be displayed, such as:

  • Posters
  • Signs
  • Merchandise
  • Radio ads

Friendly URLs shorten long URL addresses, making them easier to input manually. This makes people much more likely to visit your web page.

Please note

They should not be used for navigation within your website or anywhere where you could use a direct link instead.
